Cerulean House with Daffodils

Posted on May 19, 2022 at 3:30 PM

I purchased a new plain air kit by Guriella Painter...for the summer..something small and light that I can take anywhere. It is really only good for tiny 5 X 7 in. work but I think I'll get great use out of it. I've done 3 paintings with it so far. You can find them in the Oils Albumn...
Hidden Gem is a scene on a dead end road where houses were removed for the construction of the Miramichi Bridge. I loved the ruggedness of the scene.
Company Store - Nelson is an iconic sight on the Miramichi...the building is no longer used but the current owners keep it up.
Last but not least is The Curelean House with Daffodils's located in Loggieville NB, an area I love to go to paint and this home has alwas stood out for me because of the color. This spring they had built the wodden fence and had daffodils blooming. The yellow and cerulean blue hit me like a ton of bricks so I had to capture it in paint

A successful commission

Posted on April 23, 2022 at 2:45 PM

I recently worked with a delightful lady from the Ottawa area who commissioned me to paint an historic home on the Miramichi where she lived as a young girl. Several emails were exchanged until I got the idea of what she had in mind.
The home as it stands today had the original front veranda area closed with photos she provided I was able to picture the home in it's original state....and also add the apple tree that she the bench seat with her* as a girl sitting there.

The top photo shows the home as it is today. The bottom left was the first drawing I did to send to my client .....the bottom left was the drawing sent with corrections after discussing changes. That was approved and the painting was begun. You can see it in the Oils albumn.
I titled it  Memories

Ukraine has certainly been on many of our minds in our hears of late.....the Sunflower is their national flower and I decided to paint one for a sister for her recent birthday....after that I painted 2 more as another birthday is coming up and one of my FB friends also asked about purchasing one.
Here's the 3 I've done so far (These are Acrylics NOT oils just for a change of pace for me)

One Week 100 People FaceBook Group Project

Posted on March 13, 2022 at 2:50 PM

Every March a group I belong to on FaceBook ( One Week 100 People ) presents a sketch challange of drawing 100 people in one week.
instead of going for the 100 people, I set my own challenge ..This year it was to study the works of Vincent Van Gogh. I began a few days before the challenge date by warming up with sketches from my news feeds that were full of photos from the war inflicted on Ukraine by Russia.

The following photos are what I accomplished during the warm-up and the challenge week starting with the warm-up news feed sketches.

Trail Gates - Wilson's Point

Posted on November 12, 2021 at 1:20 PM

As Artist in Residence for Wilson's Point Historic Site and lover of this particular Miramichi area, I often do paintings there on location or from my photographs. I began Trail Gates from a photo and did a value sketch with a 2B pencil in a simple sketchbook and went from there to painting on 6 X 6 in. gallery wrap canvas. The actual painting began with a simple value painting with thinned paint. When it was dry I began painting in color in thicker paint.'s some photos.. The completed work can be found in my Oils Album: Trail Gates

I'm the Artist in Residence for Wilson's Point Historic Site and had the opportunity to see the little church with it's lights on in the evening this fall..It looked precious! of course I had to take photos and paint! I began with a sketch with a 2B pencil in a simple sketchbook and went from there to painting on 6 X 6 in. gallery wrap canvas. I began with a simple value painting with thinned paint. When it was dry I began painting in color in thicker paint.'s some photos.. The completed work can be found in my Oils Album: Evening Prayer

Sunlit Peace

Posted on October 23, 2021 at 9:45 AM

Here's the last of my tiny paintings that were created for the now cancelled Tiny Picture Show
Sunlit Peace - 5 X 7 in from a photo I took at Wilson's Point during the summer....I was attracted to the play of the light and shadows and wanted to convey the element of spiritual peace that area holds for me It's a wonderful place to take a stroll on a hot summer's day as the area is filled with the refreshing shade of the tall trees. The finished full sized photo can be found in my Oils Album. Here's a few progression shots...not many I'm afraid, as I get carried away while painting and often forget to take photos

The Red Vines

Posted on October 18, 2021 at 2:15 PM
As autumn progressed I often took a drive to St. Patrick's church in Nelson Miramichi to check on the vines on the west side of the church when they reached this lovely cherry red I knew I had to do a little painting as the entire scene seemed to have this glorious glow. I would have to have sat in the middle of the church driveway to paint this en pleinair... so this is another painting done from a photo. Here's a little progression ...the full sized picture is in the Oils Album. The Red Vines (of St Partick's)

Pabineau Falls in Autumn

Posted on October 18, 2021 at 2:00 PM
A delightful trip to Pabineau Falls...a must do every autumn for me. I love the sound of the water going over the rocks...I can feel it's power. It's never prettier than in the autumn. I was particularily attracted to the small red maple making it's way through the rock. Nature is AWESOME!
I did some sketching while I was there..but this particular painting I did from one of my photographs....It was meant to be for The 3rd Annual Tiny Picture Show held at the end of November by the Miramichi Art Core...but unfortunately we've had to cancel due to rising cases of Covid in our area. Here's how I went about creating Pabineau Falls in Autumn. The full sized picture can be found in the Oils Album.
