Sunlit Peace

Posted on October 23, 2021 at 9:45 AM

Here's the last of my tiny paintings that were created for the now cancelled Tiny Picture Show
Sunlit Peace - 5 X 7 in from a photo I took at Wilson's Point during the summer....I was attracted to the play of the light and shadows and wanted to convey the element of spiritual peace that area holds for me It's a wonderful place to take a stroll on a hot summer's day as the area is filled with the refreshing shade of the tall trees. The finished full sized photo can be found in my Oils Album. Here's a few progression shots...not many I'm afraid, as I get carried away while painting and often forget to take photos

The Red Vines

Posted on October 18, 2021 at 2:15 PM
As autumn progressed I often took a drive to St. Patrick's church in Nelson Miramichi to check on the vines on the west side of the church when they reached this lovely cherry red I knew I had to do a little painting as the entire scene seemed to have this glorious glow. I would have to have sat in the middle of the church driveway to paint this en pleinair... so this is another painting done from a photo. Here's a little progression ...the full sized picture is in the Oils Album. The Red Vines (of St Partick's)

Pabineau Falls in Autumn

Posted on October 18, 2021 at 2:00 PM
A delightful trip to Pabineau Falls...a must do every autumn for me. I love the sound of the water going over the rocks...I can feel it's power. It's never prettier than in the autumn. I was particularily attracted to the small red maple making it's way through the rock. Nature is AWESOME!
I did some sketching while I was there..but this particular painting I did from one of my photographs....It was meant to be for The 3rd Annual Tiny Picture Show held at the end of November by the Miramichi Art Core...but unfortunately we've had to cancel due to rising cases of Covid in our area. Here's how I went about creating Pabineau Falls in Autumn. The full sized picture can be found in the Oils Album.

Figures In the Landscape #3

Posted on September 26, 2021 at 5:55 PM

Last weekend a few of our Miramich Art Core group painted the last of the summer, Figures In The Landscape project.
It was held at the French Fort cove area and we had a wonderful model ...Gandalf! Thanks so much to Allen Goodfellow!
I uploaded my painting ( in pastels) to my Face Book page and it it sold before I even got the chance to put it here on my website....so here's a few photos for you.
With this, my time as president of the Miramichi Art Core has come to and end and we now welcome Wendy Matthews
Stay tuned for news of the 3rd AnnualTiny Picture Show coming up in November!

Artists On The Island

Posted on August 26, 2021 at 3:05 PM

I had a wonderful time with several artists painting on Beaubears Island for the Artsits On the Island paint out.
The end result for me was an oil painting - view thru the trees to the Nelson shore size 11 X 14 in. and can seen on my Oils Album
One of the artists took my photo during the paint out...Thank you Laura!

Figures In the Landscape #2

Posted on July 21, 2021 at 7:15 PM

Continuing on from the last post....For the 2nd of the Figures In the Landscape project we went to Hay Island off Neguac NB ...the day was overcast with the sun trying it's darndest to come through but failing miserably .....some painted some sketched. I decided to draw out my scene on some Arches rough watercolor paper..I love it for the textures in a landscape..though it isn't great for details like faces..which I really wasn't interested in anyway.....it is the figure that is important in this project. I even chose a location so that the model's back was turned to me so that I wouldn't be tempted. Only problem with that decision was that I was near the water line and before I was finished the drawing...it was QUITE obvious that the tide was coming IN! I had to change positions, but seeing that the sun was going to refuse to grace us with it's golden presence I decided to hold off on the painting bit till I got home...with hopes of making this rather dull scene into something more sunny and memorable
It was pouring cats and dogs before I got home...glad I wrapped it up when I did! (Thank you for being my artist model Wendy!)

Here's the scene....the drawing....and the finished painting

Figures In the Landscape Project

Posted on July 21, 2021 at 6:55 PM

I'm presently president of our local art group Miramichi Art Core..I seem to be the *Covid* president as I came into the position a few months before Covid began . We've not been able to have meetings since then...but have managed to have our 2nd annual Tiny Picture Show last winter and I'm sure we'll have it again this November too. We've had one paintout together in Loggieville and I was trying to think up something we could do over the summer and decided on a *Figure's In The Landscape* project ....going out into a landscape (a park...a beach.....you get the idea) once a month for June, July, August and hopefully September to paint a figure, modeling in the landscape. It's been a favorite staple of artists for centuries. About 5 of our almost 20 artists have taken an interest in doing it....HEY! Where ARE the rest of you??

Our first outing was at Wilson's Point. The day was gorgeous and our model (Thank you Rose!) was excellent!
Here's a combo photo of my efforts that day (The *Lady Rose* painting can be found in my Art Work Oils Albumn

Snowy Wood ...progression

Posted on March 17, 2021 at 9:20 AM

The Snowy Wood was painted in my car on location at Wilson's Point NB, Canada. It was a very frosty day and much too cold for standing outside. After finishing the work inside the car, it was taken back to the studio for a more finished touch. The first of the 3 following photos is the version from the original painting in the car ...followed by the studio work in #'s 2 and 3

A Road Less Travelled

Posted on November 12, 2020 at 9:40 AM

November 2020 has brought the most spectacular weather..Nov. 10th was a record breaker....going to 24 degrees Celicus and I've never been out to paint that late in the season... so THAT day was a MUST! I choose a spot I've painted before...(close to the Enclosure...on the road in to Wilson's Point Historic Site) Just a smaller canvas this time and a slightly different angle.
The sun this time of year moves very fast. Two hours maximum for the light before everything has changed too much to carry on. I began painting about 2 PM and the first photo below shows you how far I got in those 2 hours. All the information I needed was on the canvas before I left ...finishing the painting in the studio. (About another hours work)

A Road Less Travelled - oils - 9 X 12 in.

A peek at my process

Posted on October 30, 2020 at 2:10 PM

Chapel In The Woods at Dusk is a tiny watercolor done for the Tiny Picture Show to be held Nov 29th at the K of C Hall in Newcastle Miramichi
I began by talking a photo of the little Chapel at Wilson's Point around dusk during the evening of the yearly Haunted Graveyard Walk.
The first step in my process was doing a value sketch..I used blue and black ink..the blue ink was non-waterproof and easily moved with a brush and bit of water. The black ink was used on top when dry to darken some areas.
In step two I carefully choose the colors - A limited pallet of Cad yellow deep, Cad red light, and Luna Blue.
For step three I carefully and lightly did the drawing with graphite on Arches 100% cotton 140lb paper
Step Four Paint!
